Ms T Budaza

Thokozile Budaza is a distinguished non-profit executive and development strategist with over 20 years of experience leading transformative work across public health, gender justice, education, and youth development in Southern Africa. Known for her visionary leadership and deep commitment to social justice, Thoko has designed and managed multi-sectoral programmes that have shaped national policy, empowered communities, and advanced equity in some of the region’s most underserved contexts.

Thoko’s professional journey spans influential roles at organisations such as People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA), the AB InBev Foundation, Soul City Institute for Social Justice, and the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa. In each of these roles, she has overseen large-scale programme implementation, secured and managed high-value grants, led research and advocacy efforts, and strengthened organisational systems. Her experience also includes consulting for global institutions on HIV/AIDS, GBV, and public participation initiatives. She is a sought-after thought partner in gender justice and health equity, contributing to peer-reviewed research and national strategies.

A Mandela Washington Fellow and recipient of the White Ribbon Award for Activism Against Violence on Women and Children, Thoko has also been recognised by the Mail & Guardian as one of South Africa’s Top 300 and Top 200 Young South Africans for her leadership and advocacy. She holds a Master of Public Health from the University of the Western Cape, and additional qualifications from Yale University, Rutgers University, and the Foundation for Professional Development.

Thoko currently serves as a Non-Executive Board Member of Women in Mining Africa, and has previously held executive board roles with Sonke Gender Justice. Her professional ethos is grounded in feminist leadership, community empowerment, and evidence-based practice. She brings a culturally responsive lens to her work, ensuring that programmes are locally led, inclusive, and sustainable. She remains deeply committed to advancing equity, dignity, and opportunity through her work.
